There are different varieties of figs which are available throughout the world. The fig trees give best results if they are grown under optimum conditions, including the right kind of climate, soil, fertilizer, and the like.

Growing Figs – Details about Planting Process

Growing figs is an easy process. They grow well if they receive considerable amount of sunlight. These plants can tolerate most of the soil varieties provided they are properly drained. They give good yield when their roots are restricted. You can also try out growing figs in a pot to naturally limit the growth of the roots. If you are planting these in an open space, you need to adopt artificial means to cut short the formation of roots. Before planting the tree, you need to fix the wires and supports to the wall. A big hole could be dug for planting purposes, and half of the pit should be filled with soil mixed with fertilizer. Now the tree could be planted and the hole could be filled in the same way with soil, by rocking the tree gently so that the soil falls between the roots. After this process is over, water it thoroughly. Some amount of pruning is also required as part of aftercare.

Fig Fruit – Know the Details

In botanical terms, the fig fruit belongs to the mulberry family. The scientific name of this fruit is Ficus Carica. It is both grown in home gardens, and also for commercial purposes. During every season, the fig tree bears around hundreds of fruits which are pear shaped. The color and size of the fig fruit depends greatly upon the variety of the same. There are many health benefits for these fruits. They have very low calories, and contain minerals, soluble dietary fiber, pigment anti-oxidants, and vitamins. While getting these from markets, you need to get ripe fruits which are soft and have a sweet odor. The overtly soft and bruised ones should be avoided, and also the unripe green ones since they would have no smell.

Fig Season – Information

The fig season is during early autumn or early spring. The fig trees require some time after planting to root properly before getting exposed to climate variations. If these are grown in early autumn, they get enough time to root before the onset of winter. Further, these trees become inactive during the winter season. If they are planted in late autumn, the root system would not be strong in order to survive winter. The reason why these are also planted in early spring is that they could prepare themselves to withstand the possible drought, and also the scorching heat of summer. Once a strong root system is established, these trees thrive on warm weather. The harvesting is usually carried out between August and September. Moreover, the figs should be plucked from the tree with little effort.
